MINUTES OF MEETING

September 7, 2016

The monthly meeting of the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association was held on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Law Library.  President, Doug Martinson, II, Vice President/President-Elect, Derek Simpson, Treasurer, Travis Jackson, and Secretary, Nicole Schroer, presided.  The Honorable Linda Coats, gave the invocation. 

MINUTES AND TREASURER’S REPORT

The minutes were approved and distributed.  Travis Jackson, Treasurer, advised that dues were now payable and due by the end of the month.  The Treasurer’s report was read:

            BAR ASSOCIATION

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

Guest, Amanda Coolidge, was introduced after the invocation.

President, Doug Martinson announced the new time for the Bar meetings would be 12:00pm.  The food line will begin at 11:45pm. 

President, Doug Martinson announced that the Profiles in Courage Award would be presented at the next Bar meeting, October 12, 2016. 

President, Doug Martinson also announced that a Sole Practitioners Section would be formed to assist Sole and Small firm practitioners with mentorship.  An email will be sent out to gauge interest among members. 

The University of Alabama Law School will be hosting a Networking Reception on October 13, 2016 for current 3L students to meet and network with our local Bar members. 

President Doug Martinson thanked Suzanne Dorsett for her year of service as President this past year.  He indicated that a plaque would be presented to Suzanne for her service at a later date. 

Continuing Legal Education Committee

President, Doug Martinson announced that the next Lunch and Learn CLE at Gibson’s would be held on September 14, 2016.  Judge Donna Pate and Judge Ruth Ann Hall will be presenting on evidentiary issues at trial.  

Membership and Professionalism Committee

Jeremiah M. Hodges, Committee Chair, proposed William Carter Montgomery for membership in HMCBA and he was unanimously approved. He further announced that the New Member Orientation would take place at the Law Library on October 19, 2016.  More details will follow at a later date. 

Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program

Nicole Schroer announced that Pro Bono Brews would take place on October 21, 2016 from 6-10pm.  Over 18 brewers are expected to participate. Taco Mama will be providing the food and there will be a S’mores dessert bar. Music will be provided by 45 Surprise. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.  Early bird tickets ($25/each) are on sale until September 21, 2016.  After that date, tickets will be $30/each in advance or $40 at the door.  Nicole also announced that the MCVLP has received over 1200 call inquires this year.  They have opened 428 cases and closed 346 cases since January.  There remain open cases pending assignment and the MCVLP is running a “Take the Case” contest during the month of September.  The winner will be announced in October. 

PROGRAM

Tommy Siniard introduced Mary Scott Hunter, Representative, District 8, Alabama Board of Education.  Ms. Hunter discussed the current state of the Education system in Alabama.
