MINUTES OF MEETING
January 4, 2017
The monthly meeting of the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association was held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Law Library. President, Doug Martinson, II, Vice President/President-Elect, Derek Simpson, Treasurer, Travis Jackson, and Secretary, Nicole Schroer, presided. Mark Debro gave the invocation.
MINUTES AND TREASURER’S REPORT
The minutes from the November 2016 meeting were distributed and unanimously approved. The Treasurer’s report was presented:

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS
President, Doug Martinson announced the passing of Tony McLain, General Counsel for the Alabama State Bar, and a moment of silence was observed.
Guests, Michelle Luther and Alphonso Eppito, were introduced by Frank Caprio. Doug Martinson introduced guest Jason Sabio.
Insurance Committee
Kevin Heard, Committee Chair, reported that we have doubled the number of members who are under our health insurance plan this year. The plan was opened to the Small Firm and Solo Practitioner Sections across the State this year. Kevin expressed an interest to open the plan to other Sections as well, in order to grow the membership. If anyone is interested in more information about the health insurance plan, they were instructed to contact Kevin or Cindy Seeley.
Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program
Nicole Schroer announced that the MCVLP will kick-off its Training Series this month with a free CLE on January 27, 2017, entitled Handling Uncontested Divorce Cases for a Low Income Client and led by Amy Creech. If you have ever considered taking an uncontested divorce case from the MCVLP, but family law is outside your area of expertise, this CLE is for you. The MCVLP will also host a Poverty Simulation on February 24, 2017 at Church of Nativity. To sign up or receive more information about either event, please contact the MCVLP. There remain open cases pending assignment and the MCVLP is seeking additional assistance for its clients. Nicole also thanked John Brinkley for his service as Board President this past year and introduced Taze Shepard as in the incoming Board President.
Continuing Legal Education Committee
Mark Debro, Committee Co-Chair, announced that the Alacourt Update would be held on January 12, 2017. This is a good chance to learn more about Alacourt and its functions. Legal Assistants and Paralegals are invited to attend as well. Mark expressed his thanks to all members who attended the Last Chance CLE in December. Over 70 attorneys attended the CLE.
Membership and Professionalism Committee
Jeremiah M. Hodges, Committee Chair, proposed David R. Pace, Ruby K. Panter, Raven Perry-Beach, and Billy Joe Woods, Jr. for membership in HMCBA and they were unanimously approved.
Young Lawyers Section
John Brinkley announced that the next Young Lawyers CLE Lunch with the Judges would take place on January 12, 2017.
PROGRAM
Joe King served as Master of Ceremonies to celebrate Harvey Morris’ 50 years of service to the legal profession. Judge Donna Pate, Tommy Siniard, and Judge Bill Page all provided heartfelt and humorous stories about Harvey from over the years. Members of the Bar expressed their sincere appreciation of Harvey and his service to our legal community and profession.
