MINUTES OF MEETING

November 2, 2016

The monthly meeting of the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association was held on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at 11:45 p.m. on the second floor of the Law Library.  President, Doug Martinson, II, Vice President, Derek Simpson, and Treasurer, Travis Jackson presided.  The Honorable Dennis E. O’Dell gave the invocation.

MINUTES AND TREASURER’S REPORT

The minutes were approved and distributed.  Travis Jackson, Treasurer, read the Treasurer’s report:

BAR ASSOCIATION

                   Compass General Account:                                    $87,181.56

                   Compass Money Market:                                       $70,000.00

                   Compass CD:                                                        $25,000.00

                   Compass CD:                                                        $50,000.00

                   Compass Ben Boyanton Scholarship Account:       $  8,641.71

                   Regions Sarah Jaye Daye Scholarship Account:      $53,724.92

PayPal HERE:  The HMCBA now has PayPal HERE as well as PayPal online.  You may catch Cindy or Cathy with their phones and pay your dues or Last Chance Registration today.

Reminder:  We are in the process of sending 2nd Notices for Bar Dues.  A Late Fee of $20 will be added to any unpaid dues after December 1, 2016.  Please remit promptly.  Also, if you have not paid your dues, you cannot attend Last Chance Seminar at the member price of $75.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

Guests were introduced after the invocation:  Billy J. Woods, Jr., guest of Franklin Corley.

Membership and Professionalism Committee:

Jeremiah H. Hodges, Committee Char, proposed the following for membership in the HMCBA:  Derek Troy Cantrell, Emily Grace Peak, and Katherine George Woodfin.  A motion was made by Taze Shepard to accept the proposed for membership; seconded by Brian Williams.  Motion approved.

Young Lawyers:

Ty Shepard announced that the Young Lawyer social will be at Yellowhammer on 11/2/16.  Sign up with Ty Shepard if you are interested in attending the lunch with the Judges.

MCVLP:

Taze Shepard reported on the MCVLP.  There was good attendance at the Pro Bono Brews.  There was an ethics CLE at Cotton Row Restaurant on October 17, 2016.  Several of the Judges were in attendance as well as the attorneys who have volunteered over 50 hours in 2015.

CLE:

Mark Debro announced that the Last Chance Seminar will be on December 8-9, 2016.

Insurance:

Cindy Seeley announced that new premium for the BCBS Insurance for single coverage will be $747.27 and family coverage will be $1,731.19; our rates went up 11% from last year.  The co-pay is $40.00 with a $500.00 deductible.  There is no longer a pre-existing clause.  November is open enrollment month.

Bar Commissioners Report:

John Brinkley report that the Alabama State Bar selected three (3) people from Madison County to attend the Alabama Leadership forum:  Valerie Brown, Mike Huff and Patrick Chesnut.

Also, if you do six (6) hours of pro bono work through the State or MCVLP, you can get one (1) CLE hour credit.

Toys and Toddies:

Event will be December 1, 2016.  Invitation are going out soon.  Please bring an unwrapped toy or donation for Toys for Tots.

Derek Simpson introduced Tommy Siniard and Trey Riley as our speakers for the meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
